It is very important that you be to class every day, on time.  If you miss a day of class on a block day, it is like missing two days of class.  In order to be successful in Math or any other class for that matter, you need to be an active participant in your learning.  That includes but is not limited to: being in class, not leaving class, taking notes, asking and answering questions, doing all required work to the best of your ability, and getting additional help as needed.  This may include getting notes from a friend, or working with a teacher to get the missed information.

On a typical day (block or regular) there will be a time set aside for homework discussion, daily lesson, deepening the understanding of the lesson, and beginning homework.  It is important for you to be active in each part of the day whether working in groups or individually.

Your grade will be broken down into 2 parts:

Homework: 35%

Your homework assignments are worth 10 points and will be graded based on two pieces; completion and accuracy. Each night you will have a set of selected problems that will be graded on accuracy. This portion of your homework is worth 5 points and should be completed first on your homework assignments. We will not go over these problems at the beginning of class but you will be allowed to work on these at the end of the class period and ask for help from your peers and the teacher. The second portion is based on completion in which you will receive 5 points for. It is important to do your homework each and every day.

Homework is a way to practice your skills and determine if you understand the material.  Each day I will begin with answering questions on your homework.  I encourage you to put question marks or highlight questions you are struggling with so they are easily identifiable when you come to class. If on the rare occasion, you do not have your homework with you, a late penalty of 20% will be assessed when you turn the homework in, up until the next assessment. You have up until the unit assessment to receive a maximum of 5 points. The purpose of homework is to prepare you for your assessment, all late  homework needs to be turned in by the day you take an exam  for that particular unit.

Assessments: 65%

Quizzes are a middle of the road assessment to determine if you have mastered the beginning skills in each unit.  These will typically be announced ahead of time and may be noted on the calendar.  It is important to study for quizzes as well as tests.  There will be no make-ups for quizzes.  If you are excused from a quiz, your test score will be entered as your quiz score.  If you miss a quiz with an unexcused absence, there will be a grade penalty.

Each unit will culminate in a test.  This test will determine which skills you have mastered and which skills you still need to work on. These tests will always be announced ahead of time and will be on the calendar.  If you are absent on the day of the test, you will be required to make up the test at the next available opportunity.  This could include the next class period, Panther Time, or another opportunity outside of class.  If the test is missed with an unexcused absence, there will be a grade penalty.

After each assessment, we will do an Aftermath.  This will be an opportunity for you to identify what you are struggling with and help you learn how to study.  This will be a great tool for you to become a better Math student and a way for you to improve your assessment scores.

The grading scale for this class will be:

A = 90 – 100                B = 80 – 89                C = 70– 79               D = 60 – 69               F = 0 – 59

Please be aware that 60% is the lowest passing grade.
